One cannot steal data.. Theft is about taking away property, not about copying or taking away data..

It can be considered a service theft then. The data is being hijacked by unauthorized users for their own ends.

I think that the first user is correct - theft generally requires an intention to deprive the owner of the ability to use it. However, I think that "data theft" is the name that people would use for the activities described on this page, so I think the title should stay even if it is a slight misnomer. 216.36.186.2 (talk) 20:13, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also was going to comment on Data "copyright infringement". It's not theft, people have been brainwashed by the RIAA. If it was theft, they wouldn't have all of these lawsuits, the police would just pick you up and put you in jail. See: Cyber Rights: Defending Free Speech in the Digital Age Mike Godwin.Tstrobaugh (talk) 20:38, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What it seems like everyone may be looking for is simply called theft of Intellectual Property. Mnemnoch (talk) 09:51, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly what I thought when reading the title. It's simply not possible to steal digital data. You can copy data and then delete it but even if the data is "deleted" it can be recovered, unless it's shreded or overwritten. "Data theft" is incorrect. 85.240.146.92 (talk) 23:05, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't matter what you all think of the accuracy, validity or legitimacy of the term data theft. First of all, if reliable sources approve of its use, it's good enough for Wikipedia. Second of all, English is constantly morphing, often to the consternation of well educated people. --anon. 71.183.139.60 (talk) 00:48, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just for the record, the links I added to this article were merged from this version of Thumbsucking, prior to it becoming a redirect. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thumbsucking. Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Data theft. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true or failed to let others know (documentation at {{Sourcecheck}}).

How can the unauthorised download of confidential data to a USB wossnamr ever be anything other than deliberate? Mr Larrington (talk) 13:01, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Data theft

[edit]

Hello !

I would like to put some more information about the "Data theft" wikipedia page. Indeed, I think it can be interesting to write about the types of data theft, what kind of data can be stolen, how its data can be used and so on.

What do you think about it ? We can discuss about this subject if you want.

Thank you,

Camille

Terminology

[edit]

"In some countries this term is incorrect because it is considered that theft is of a thing (material object) and information is not a thing." Considering that "data theft" is an English phrase, I don't see what the laws of a Spanish speaking country have to do with anything. At best, it's a note to potential translators to choose their words carefully. --User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 17:55, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

English, please

[edit]

Can someone rephrase the following sentence so that it is actually coherent English: "Data leak is part of insider attack that accidental or unintentional data loss because of specific circuit stances." --User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 13:32, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
